Going back to school is worth it when you have a clear career goal that genuinely requires a degree and you've ruled out cheaper alternatives like certifications, bootcamps, or on-the-job training. The biggest risk is taking on debt for a vague sense that more education will open doors — without a specific target, that debt often outweighs the salary bump. If your field requires the credential, you can fund it without crippling loans, and you have the time to commit, school is a strong investment. If you're mainly going back because you're unhappy at work, fix the career problem first — a degree won't solve job dissatisfaction on its own.
